Newton-John's Physical is top sexy song: Billboard

Physical, a 1981 tune full of innuendo by Olivia Newton-John, has topped a survey of the sexiest songs of all time by Billboard.

A 1980s song, full of innuendo, by Olivia Newton-John has topped a survey of the sexiest songs of all time.

Physical has been declared the top sexy song of all time in an investigation conducted by Billboard magazine, which examined the performance of songs on the Hot 100 chart from August 1958 to January 2010.

The bouncy 1981 tune spent 10 weeks at the top of the charts. It was released at the height of the aerobics dance craze and became popular in exercise classes despite its suggestive lyrics such as: "There's nothin' left to talk about, unless it's horizontally."

Newton-John, the British-born Australian actress who starred in Grease, is currently in Toronto shooting the film Score: A Hockey Musical, in which she portrays a hockey star's parent.

The 61-year-old performer has four Grammy Awards but currently spends much of her time on her charitable projects.

In the Billboard survey, Rod Stewart came close at No. 2 with 1976's Tonight's the Night and also landed another song on the top 10 with Do Ya Think I'm Sexy.

"Some songs are steamy slow-jams, some are hi-octane arena-rockers, but what they all have in common (and what got them on this list) is that the subject matter of each song is directly related to sex, in some way," Billboard said in a statement Friday.

In all, 50 songs are listed. The top 10 are:

  1. Physical, Olivia Newton-John.
  2. Tonight's The Night, Rod Stewart.
  3. I'll Make Love To You, Boyz II Men.
  4. Too Close, Next.
  5. Let's Get It On, Marvin Gaye.
  6. Hot Stuff, Donna Summer.
  7. Do That To Me One More Time, Captain and Tennille.
  8. Like A Virgin, Madonna.
  9. Kiss You All Over, Exile.
  10. Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, Rod Stewart.
