British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran joined Canada's Shawn Mendes onstage Wednesday, surprising fans who came out for Mendes' Illuminate tour stop in Brooklyn.

Sheeran joined Mendes onstage at the Barclays Center to perform Mercy with the 19-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter.

"That was just as crazy for me as it was for you guys," Mendes reportedly said, as Sheeran left the stage.

Musical goals

Mendes has long been a fan of Sheeran's. He expressed his admiration of the Thinking Out Loud singer on multiple occasions and said he would like to tour with him.

Mendes' There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back recently leapfrogged over Sheeran's Shape of You on the Billboard 100 and currently rests sixth on the chart.

The Toronto-born singer is slated to perform at the MTV VMAs on Aug. 27 and will be the first artist featured on the reboot of MTV's Unplugged this fall.
