Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and the whole super family will be pulling on their matching spandex suits for The Incredibles 2, with director Brad Bird back at the helm.

The American filmmaker, who is currently promoting his science fiction mystery movie Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, confirmed to the trade publication Collider that work has begun on the long awaited animated sequel.

"I'm writing it," said Bird, who also wrote and directed the 2004 original about a family of reluctant super heroes.

"I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn't get a chance to use," he said. "There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie."

In the first film, Craig T. Nelson voiced Mr. Incredible, the patriarch in the midst of a midlife crisis, while Holly Hunter played the protective mother, Elastigirl.

The plot saw her forced to allow her whole family, including her super-speedy son Dash and her disappearing daughter Invisigirl, to come out of hiding when the evil villain Syndrome (Jason Lee) threatens to destroy all the super heroes in the world.

The film grossed more than $630 million US at the worldwide box office.

Disney, which purchased Pixar in 2006, confirmed plans for The Incredibles 2 in 2014, but no mention has been made of who will star in the sequel or what the plot will be, but fans might not have to wait too long to find out.

With Tomorrowland slated to hit Canadian theatres later this month, Bird says he'll soon be free to focus on "playing with The Incredibles sandbox again."

Bird also revealed that he was approached by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about the possibility of directing one of the Star Wars films, but that he was too busy with The Incredibles sequel to think about jumping into that franchise just now.
