The Bear, Succession tie for most wins at 75th Emmy Awards
The show, originally set to take place last fall, was pushed to 2024 due to the Hollywood strikes
After a four month delay, the 2023 Emmy Awards celebrated the best in television Monday night.
The show, which was originally slated to air in September 2023 and was pushed into the new year due to the Hollywood strikes, took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Singer Elton John achieved EGOT status — when an individual collects an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony — after winning an Emmy for outstanding variety special (live) for Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium. The musician has five Grammys, one Tony and two Oscars.
John's husband, Toronto producer David Furnish, also won an Emmy for his role on the variety special.
The Bear and Succession tied for most wins, taking home six awards each.
The Bear won outstanding comedy series, with Canadian chef, producer and actor Matty Matheson accepting the award on behalf of the cast and crew. Meanwhile star Jeremy Allen White took home outstanding lead actor in a comedy series, and Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won outstanding supporting actress and actor in a comedy series.
Succession had 27 nomination and picked up several awards in the drama series category, including Sarah Snook for lead actress, Kieran Culkin for lead actor and Matthew Macfadyen for supporting actor. It also took home the last award of the night for outstanding drama series.
Beef took home five awards in the limited or anthology series or movie category including outstanding lead actress for Ali Wong and outstanding lead actor for Steven Yeun.
The live broadcast was hosted by actor Anthony Anderson. It followed the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month where many series, including The Last of Us, The White Lotus, The Bear and Beef, picked up several awards.
Canadian nominations
Hamilton's Martin Short was up for outstanding lead actor in a comedy for Only Murders in the Building, but lost to White from The Bear. Canadian producer Susan Coyne was up for an award for outstanding limited or anthology series for her work in Daisy Jones & the Six, but lost to Beef.
Several other Canadians were nominated for Creative Emmys leading up to the Monday broadcast but lost in their respective categories, including Scarborough, Ont., born actor Lamar Johnson for outstanding guest actor in a drama for his performance in The Last of Us. Actors Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Oliver Platt (The Bear) were both up for outstanding guest actor in a comedy, but lost to Sam Richardson of Ted Lasso.
The Last of Us also had several additional Canadian nominations at the Creative Emmys including Chris Glimsdale and Penny Thompson for outstanding contemporary hairstyling, Rebecca Toon and Michelle Carr for outstanding contemporary costumes, and Paul Healy for outstanding production design. Though the nominees didn't win, Canadian audio engineer Michael Playfair did take home an award for outstanding sound mixing.
Chilean-Canadian composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer also won a Creative Emmy for outstanding music composition for a series for The White Lotus.
