More than two years after signing off from CBS's Late Show, David Letterman is returning to television with a six-episode talk show on Netflix, the streaming service said Tuesday.

Letterman, 70, will host the as-yet-untitled series, which will feature interviews with "extraordinary people" and segments from the field "expressing his curiosity and humour," Netflix said in a statement.

In each hour-long episode, Letterman will conduct a long-form conversation with a single guest, and explore topics of his own outside the studio.

"I feel excited and lucky to be working on this project for Netflix," Letterman said in a statement.

"Here's what I have learned: If you retire to spend more time with your family, check with your family first. Thanks for watching, drive safely," he said.

The series is set to premiere sometime in 2018. A Netflix spokesperson told CBC News the show would be available in Canada and globally on the same day.

In 33 years on late-night television, Letterman hosted 6,028 episodes of NBC's Late Night and CBS's Late Show, and is the longest-running late-night broadcaster in American history. He stepped down from Late Show in May 2015.
