Canadian actor plays Donald Trump

Canadian actor Justin Louis plays Donald Trump in an ABC movie.

Canadian actor Justin Louis will take on a new role – as well as a new hairdo – when he appears Tuesday evening as Donald Trump in the biopic Trump Unauthorized.

The ABC production, which can also be seen in Canada on the CHUM family of stations, traces Trump's rise from not-so-humble beginnings to an even-less-humble career as a New York real-estate tycoon.

The North York, Ont.-born Louis is known for his work in the motion picture Dawn of the Dead and such short-lived programs as Hidden Hills.

Trump Unauthorized focuses on the story of how Trump became The Donald, one of the richest and most talked-about personalities of the 1980s, who then faced the near-collapse of his empire.

It is based on the Gwenda Blair books The Trumps: Three Generations That Built An Empire and Donald Trump: Master Apprentice.

"As Trump's empire grew, he became a master of media, using the spotlight to bring favourable attention to his visions," notes the CHUM press material.

The production also stars Katherine Winnick as the mogul's first wife, Ivana Trump. Their marriage dissolved when he took up with the model Marla Maples, who is played by Jennifer Baxter.

In addition, the movie shows how Trump's fortunes were affected by the alcoholism of his brother, Fred Trump Jr.

There has been a resurgence of interest in all things Trump since the debut last year of his reality show, NBC's The Apprentice.

Trump himself is reportedly less than impressed with Trump Unauthorized. "I'm sure it's a beauty," he said sarcastically when asked about it last week.

"It looks like there's plenty of sex involved," he added, saying the "commercials make it look like it's Desperate Housewives plus two."

Canada's Saul Rubinek also co-stars in Trump Unauthorized.
