Britney Spears breaks up with fiancé, X Factor

Britney Spears has parted ways with both The X Factor and fiancé Jason Trawick, and says she’ll soon get back to recording music.

The 31-year-old pop star said Friday she’s made the "difficult decision" to leave her job as a judge on the reality competition show The X Factor. Spears said watching the contestants perform made her miss singing.

"I can't wait to get back out there and do what I love most," she said in a statement.

Spears was paid a reported $15 million US to appear on the show in hope her star power would boost its ratings. The numbers instead went down.

Fellow judge Antonio "L.A." Reid previously announced he was quitting, leaving creator and executive producer Simon Cowell with two spots to fill. The second season of X Factor wrapped last month.

The news came within hours of word Spears that has broken up with Trawick, ending their year-long engagement and his role as co-conservator of her personal affairs.

"Jason and I have decided to call off our engagement," Spears said in a separate statement, first released to People magazine. "I'll always adore him and we will remain great friends."

"As this chapter ends for us a new one begins," said Trawick, adding he will always "love and cherish" Spears and her two sons, Sean and Jayden. "We will be close forever."

Spears has been under a court-supervised conservatorship since early 2008, following a spate of erratic behavior and two hospitalizations. Her father and another co-conservator share control over numerous aspects of her personal life.

Spears has been married twice before — to dancer Kevin Federline in 2004 and to childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander for just a few days earlier that same year.

Trawick and Spears were engaged in December 2011 and he was appointed a co-conservator along with her father, Jamie, in April.

Trawick has served as Spears' agent and the pair started dating in 2009.

Jamie Spears met with L.A. Superior Court Judge Reva Goetz for about an hour on Friday over the change, but left before a hearing where Trawick's resignation was announced.

Trawick did not have authority over Spears' finances, which have rebounded since her public meltdown. Goetz recently reviewed and approved of an accounting that showed Spears ended 2010 with more than $27.5 million in assets, including nearly $15 million in cash.

Spears’ most recent album, Femme Fatale, came out in March 2011.
