Authors take part in literacy campaign

TORONTO - Children's book author Dennis Lee and writers Michael Crummey and Diane Schoemperlen are among the authors appearing at book chains across the county Saturday as part of a promotion for literacy.

Indigo and its related chains are holding Spread the Word, a charity event that contributes five per cent of every sale towards Frontier College - Canada's oldest literacy organization.

Among the writers participating:

Lee, author of Alligator Pie and Garbage Delight will be at the Toronto Eaton Centre.

Governor General award winner Diane Schoemperlen will read from her latest book Red Plaid Shirt and award-winning author Helen Humphreys will read from Lost Garden in Kingston.

Michael Crummey, author of the 2001 Giller nominated novel River Thieves will be on hand to meet people in St. John's Newfoundland.

Proceeds from the event will be used for Frontier College's after-school homework clubs in inner cities.
