Latest from Marvel features off-kilter humour and easygoing star Paul Rudd, says CBC's film critic Eli Glasner

Ant-Man, the latest cinematic superhero tale pulled from the pages of Marvel Comics, is irreverent and light. It harkens back to the fun of the the first Iron Man rather than the monster-sized Avengers films, says CBC's Eli Glasner.

Starring the easygoing and amiable Paul Rudd, it's a simple story of a man trying to straighten out and – thanks to some nifty technology – discovering the hero inside.

"Ant-Man offers a refreshing alternative to The Avengers' smash-fest," Glasner says.

Ant-Man hits theatres Friday.
