Alexina Louie, Alex Pauk win composer`s award

TORONTO - Canadian composers Alexina Louie and Alex Pauk were awarded the Louis Applebaum Composers Award during a ceremony Friday night in Toronto.

Established at the Ontario Arts Council Foundation in 1998, the $10,000 award recognizes excellence in music composition of any genre.

The jury unanimously selected the team of Pauk and Louie out of eight nominated film composers.

"Their body of work is of the highest calibre and demonstrates an ability to work in all film media, with a significant degree of sophistication and originality," said a statement from the jury.

Louie is a well-known composer, creating works for orchestras, new music ensembles, chamber groups and soloists.

Pauk, founder and artistic director of Esprit Orchestra, is a leading figure in film music scoring, conducting and production.

Together they've written scores for more than 20 feature films including Barbara Willis Sweete's Perfect Pie and Don McKellar's Last Night .

Jury members were film composer Pierre-Daniel Rheault; Judy Gladstone, executive director of Bravo!/FACT/MaxFACT; and writer/filmmaker Jeremy Podeswa.
