A singer who appeared on the Mexican version of The Voice in 2011 is dead after being gunned down following a birthday celebration with friends in Chicago.

Alejandro Jano Fuentes, 45, died Saturday, a representative from the Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed to CBC.

The musician, who was born in Mexico and lived in Chicago, was shot several times in the head late Thursday outside a performing arts studio he ran for aspiring students.

Fuentes' death comes a week after another contestant from The Voice was shot and killed: Christina Grimmie.

Grimmie, 22, who appeared as a contestant on the American version in 2014, was signing autographs following a performance in Orlando June 10 when a man opened fire on her and then killed himself.

According to the Chicago Police Department, Fuentes was ordered to get out of his car by an armed man and was shot when he refused. No one is in custody.

It's unclear whether the shooting was a carjacking, armed robbery or whether the singer was targeted. Police are still investigating and say nothing is being ruled out.

The Chicago school Fuentes owned, Tras Bambalinas, is working with his friends to raise money to help support Fuentes' family.
