Rob Lantz unveils PC Party's Open Island strategy

Progressive Conservative Party Leader Rob Lantz unveiled an "Open Island" commitment on Monday morning that promised to overhaul how people interact with the government.

"Having an open government is more accountable, efficient and effective than what Islanders presently have," Lantz said in a statement.

"Using technology better we can make Prince Edward Island an open island for information. A new direction that engages Islanders, inspires innovation, and drives jobs and growth."

The Open Island commitment, which was unveiled at Holland College's Centre of Applied Sciences and Technology, focuses on the principles of open government, open information, and open data.

The Progressive Conservatives, under the plan, would:

• Make specific data sets available online
• Post all government loans, grants, write-offs and all contracts of more than $1,000
• Add municipalities and post-secondary institutions to the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act

The Tory leader said the Open Island strategy would create greater collaboration and engagement between citizens and the provincial government.

P.E.I. Premier Wade MacLauchlan is expected to announce the provincial election on Monday night at his nomination meeting in Covehead.
