The P.E.I. NDP is committed to a new provincial health accord, says leader Mike Redmond.

At a news conference Tuesday in Souris, Redmond announced, as part of the party's election platform, that the accord would focus on effective governance, community engagement plus income security and its effect on health.

"With the P.E.I. health accord, people will have a say in their own health," said Redmond.

"An NDP government will work with the regions and communities of all Prince Edward Island to ensure you have the services, the supports and infrastructure you need for everybody in your community to achieve optimal health and wellness."

If elected, the party will review the mandate, operations and performance of Health PEI, says Redmond.

If the review determines Health PEI is not the best option for the management and delivery of health care, then it will be replaced, says Redmond.

He says the Health PEI structure is not guaranteed to be in existence after two years of an NDP government.

More details on the party's health accord will be announced in the coming weeks.
