Yukon's first cougar a monster cat
Yukon biologists have determined the territory's first 'official' cougar was a magnificent cat of near record size. And they say the cat was not alone. The dead cougar was found last month near Watson Lake.
Yukon Biologist Philip Merchant says double sets of tracks in the area suggest the big male cougar was not alone.
He's hoping to put the preserved remains on public display next year.
"It's a remarkable animal and the specimens will be very valuable as they're in good condition. The hide is in good shape and will produce an impressive display," he says. "The skull and skeleton will remain for research purposes."
Merchant says the cougar measured over seven feet from nose to tail. He says skull measurements show it rivaled record- size cougars taken by southern hunters.
