Windsor Heritage Committee approves plans for Sandwich Town roundabout
Discussion of where Brock and Tecumseh statue will be placed will happen later
A proposed roundabout at Sandwich Street and University Avenue is one step closer to being built, despite objections from members of the Sandwich Town community.
The City of Windsor Heritage Committee approved plans for the traffic circle, which will feature heritage designs to fit the look of the neighbourhood, during their meeting Tuesday night.
One proposal suggested a statue featuring Chief Tecumseh and Major General Isaac Brock on a plinth in the middle of the roundabout, but representatives from the community argued it should be placed in Paterson Park as was originally intended.
Concerns raised about car crashes
Community members, including Terrence Kennedy, expressed concerns that a statue could be a distraction to drivers and cause more accidents if erected at the centre of the roundabout.
"There's been a lot of concerns and there has to be a full discussion on this before it's placed anywhere," said Olde Sandwich Towne BIA chairperson Mary Ann Cuderman.
Committee chairperson Bill Marra said the statue was not meant to be part of the discussion Tuesday.
"Today was just about ... should we approve the construction of a heritage roundabout," said Marra. "As it relates to the Tecumseh and Brock monument, that will be decided at the appropriate time."
The committee's recommendation to approve the roundabout still has to go to city council.
