Heat warning issued for Windsor and area by Environment Canada
Temperatures expected to reach 37 C at some points this weekend
A heat warning is in effect for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent with Environment Canada sending out a special weather statement Thursday.
The weather agency warns people to take the necessary safety precautions with the arrival of scorching heat.
Environment Canada said the hot weather will persist throughout the weekend and it's not certain when temperatures will come back down.
"Current indications suggest the heat could persist into the middle of next week," the statement said.
In addition, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit's acting medical officer of health Wajid Ahmed has issued an "extended heat warning" beginning Thursday. David Colby, the medical officer of health at Chatham-Kent Public Health, issued the same warning for that area.
"Warning signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion," the Windsor Essex health unit said, adding people can visit 211 Ontario for a list of cooling centres.
Chatham-Kent Public Health reminds people to seek cooler or air conditioned spaces and to not leave people or pets in a parked car.
The extended heat warnings will stay in effect until further notice.
Meteorologists are calling for a low of 20 C Thursday night. On Friday, the high is expected to be 31 C, but it will feel like 40, with a very high UV index of 10.
This weekend people can expect to see highs reaching 37 C.
