Windsor city council on Monday approved nearly $1 million in upgrades to the WFCU Centre.

Most councillors viewed the spending as a long-term investment that will help the city succeed in its bid to make Windsor a sports tourism destination, attracting major events like next year's Memorial Cup hockey tournament.

The city will now spend $990,000 to build features like a new media platform, install new rink boards and glass as well as create additional dressing rooms.

The investment will help the city look great when international news media broadcast from the arena, Mayor Drew Dilkens said several times at Monday's council meeting.

Coun. Irek Kusmierczyk was the only one to vote against the upgrade.

Earlier this month, the city also approved $150,000 to outfit a backup generator at the WFCU Centre to avoid any potentially embarrassing power outages during the upcoming FINA swimming championships.
