Provincial police have laid a raft of firearms charges against two suspects involved in a multi-vehicle collision Wednesday on Highway 3.

Four motorists were sent to hospital with injuries ranging from serious to life-threatening when a Lexus and Volkswagen collided head-on between Walker Road and Sexton Side Road about 9:15 a.m.

Some officers were seen toting assault rifles as they investigated the crash and the OPP's canine unit was on the scene. The dog appeared to be focused on the back seat and trunk area of one of the vehicles.

A 21-year-old Windsor man and 27-year-old Toronto man are in custody facing charges including careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous for the purpose, unauthorized posession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm knowing a serial number has been tampered with.

Two other motorists involved in the crash -- a 70-year-old Essex man and a 66-year-old Essex woman -- remain in hospital with serious to life-threatening injuries.

The collision is still under investigation by the OPP's Technical Collision Investigators.
