Tour the South West Detention Centre

This new South West Detention Centre is set to open in the first half of 2014.

Friday, staff opened its doors for a media tour. You can take a virtual tour of your own by watching the video above.

The new facility will be maximum security, with a 315-bed capacity for both male and female inmates. It includes general population, infirmary and special purpose beds.

It also includes infirmary units, mental health unit and segregation units.

The centre also features a courtyard with a basketball net, exercise equipment, including stationary bikes, weights and treadmills, yoga mats and gardening.

There also opportunities for women to learn basic sewing, hairdressing and food preparation.

The jail replaces and consolidates jails in Windsor and Chatham.

The centre will be open for public tours May 3 and 4 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day.
