Red Wings sell 'melted ice' to commemorate final season at Joe Louis Arena

The Detroit Red Wings are offering fans an opportunity to own a piece of the legendary Joe Louis Arena — in the form of fancy vials of melted rink-water.

For $85 dollars U.S., shipping included, fans get melted ice their hockey heroes skated on in a commemorative "Farewell Season at The Joe" container sitting inside a shadowbox. The box also comes with a framed photo of the farewell ceremony that followed the Wings' final game at the arena.

Supplies are limited with only 3,000 vials available.

Fans filled the East entrance to the Joe Louis Arena to see their favourite hockey players walk into the arena one last time.

"Celebrating the 38-year home of the Detroit Red Wings, these commemorative ice vials serve as a wonderful keepsake capturing the essence of The Joe's electrifying farewell," wrote director of community relations and Detroit Red Wings Foundation Kevin Brown in a media release.

Proceeds from the vials will go to the foundation, a non-profit organization that supports initiatives that "contribute to the growth of the sport of hockey."

The Red Wings will play their next season in the newly-built Little Caesars Arena.
