An Essex County philanthropist's decision to double his million-dollar donation to St. Anne's Church in Tecumseh means plans to restore the church's steeple can finally begin.

The Diocese of London recently announced Al Quesnel was giving another $1.25 million to the restoration project, pushing the fundraising effort over the $3-million mark and within reach of its goal of $3.8 million, according to Rev. Eugène Roy.

"The time-frame of the church restoration has jumped ahead four or five years thanks to these incredible gifts," he said.  "We are deeply humbled and appreciative for these blessings."

Exterior work on the walls of the church and chapel is currently underway, Roy added.

The steeple was removed due to safety concerns has been resting in the church's front lawn for almost a decade, but now the diocese is discussing how it can be restored.

"Mr. Quesnel is hoping that his donations will inspire others to donate as well, in whatever amount they are able," said Roy.
