Species of jumping spider believed to be new to Canada

Visitors at Windsor's Ojibway Park found a species of jumping spider that's believed to be new to Canada.

Though jumping spiders are common in the region, this particular species has not been identified in Windsor before now. The tiny, hairy spider, called the phidipus putnami, is usually found in the southern United States.

Brad Hamel and Tibor Nagy discovered the spider last week.

"This finding proves how easy it is to help document and contribute to the comprehensive biological inventory of the Ojibway Prairie Complex," they wrote on social media.

Ojibway naturalist Tom Preney is eager to find one. 

"It's going to be something of interest for me to see if I can actually turn up one, because I would enjoy seeing it because of how attractive of a spider it is," he said. "It's definitely something that I will be looking for."
