An excavator swooped in to demolish one of the boarded-up, vacant homes on Indian Road Tuesday, moments after the City of Windsor issued the company a permit to do so.

The Canadian transit Company had filed for permits to demolish 33 homes in the area, the first phase of demolition to begin construction on the new twin span.

The city finally granted a permit to the company, after millions of dollars in legal battles fighting it.

An on-site demolition worker said the work is very methodical. The roof comes off first, and then the bricks to the house.
