A mosquito pool in Essex County has tested positive for the West Nile virus, the first sign showing the virus is in the area this year.

There haven't been any reports of a human case of the virus, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit said.

Homeowners are being reminded to remove any standing water around their house and property.

Residents should also continue to protect themselves against mosquitoes.

4 ways to stay protected

  • Use insect repellents that contain DEET or other approved ingredients when going outdoors.
  • Make sure that door and window screens fit securely and are free of holes.
  • People can limit the time they spend outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a hat when outdoors — light-coloured clothing is best as mosquitoes are most attracted to dark colours.

The health unit and municipalities will continue to monitor for the West Nile virus.
