Jason Collins and Barbara Patterson of Caribbean Island Spice show how their Jamaican-style red snapper is prepared.

Caribbean Island Spice is a small takeout restaurant in Windsor's west end, near the university. Serving authentic, home-style Jamaican food, and popular with students and residents alike, it is well on its way to becoming a neighbourhood institution.

At the risk of sounding clichéd, it really is hard not to smile when you step inside.

It's the small details: brightly coloured walls, little vases with sunflowers, and music from a Jamaican radio station blaring over the speakers. I've visited Caribbean Island Spice a number of times since I first wandered in a few months ago, and I'm happy to say that the food makes me even happier.

I met up with Jason Collins and Barbara Patterson, the mother and son team that own the restaurant, to learn more. Click on the audio player to hear the story.

November is almost here - and with colder weather around the corner, Jonathan Pinto decided to find some food to put him in a tropical state of mind. He told us all about small take-out place called Caribbean Island Spice.

Ready to try some home-style Jamaican food?

Caribbean Island Spice is located at 1725 Wyandotte St. W. in Windsor, on the southwest corner of Campbell Avenue and Wyandotte Street West. They are open every day except Sunday.
