Harrow high school petition part of bid to reverse decision on school closure
Hundreds of people living in Harrow are hoping that a petition may help spare their local high school from a pending closure.
School trustees voted in favour last month of closing Harrow District High School at the end of this school year.
The high school has had low enrolment, which factored into the trustees' decision last month.
The school's website indicates the high school has typically had between 300 and 350 students in recent years.
Yet the community has decided to fight back in the form of requesting an administrative review of the process that led to the decision to close the high school, as well as the decision itself.
Sheri Dzudovich is a parent of two students who attend the high school.
She helped gather more than 300 signatures for the petition, which has been put together to show support for the review that will be requested.
"I feel great, the community has a whole has participated," she said in a telephone interview on Monday.
Dzudovich handed the petition over to officials with the Town of Essex.
While she couldn't say how long the process would take if an administrative review occurs, Dzudovich was thankful for the support from residents.
"I'd just like to thank the population of Harrow for their community support and their outcry of support all along," Dzudovich said.
The Town of Essex issued a news release last Friday that outlined the process involving the petition.
It must submit the request for a review to the school board and to the Minister of Education by Nov. 12.
