Investigation continues in fatal west Windsor fire

Investigators with Windsor fire and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office will continue to examine the scene of a fatal fire that left a 19-year-old University of Windsor student dead and five others taken to hospital.

OFM is investigating a fire on Rankin Avenue. It said the fire does not look look suspicious.

Investigators with Windsor fire and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office will continue to examine the scene of a fatal fire that left a 19-year-old University of Windsor student dead and five others taken to hospital.

The OFM said it looks like the fire started on main floor. The fire does not look suspicious and there were two working fire alarms in the basement.

The fire began at 272 Rankin Avenue at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. It's unclear how the fire started. Neighbours reported seeing the house in flames and recalled hearing an explosion.

Investigators will  likely spend most of the day Thursday working on determining what happened, said John Lee, the fire prevention officer for Windsor Fire and Rescue.

Five people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Officials with Windsor fire have not provided an update on their condition.

The OFM is still investigating the incident. It may take a few days before it completes the investigation.
