Electricity rates devastating to farmers, Horwath hears

Rising electricity rates are devastating dairy farmers in Essex County, according to provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath.

On Tuesday, Horwath met with farmers in Kingsville, along with local MPPs, to discuss the issue.

One of the farmers at the round table said using energy at off-peak times is not viable when there are 50 cattle that need to be milked.

Mark Stannard said his monthly electricity bills have been as high as $2,000.
