CRA scam continues to victimize Windsor residents by asking for Bitcoin, say police
One victim lost $17K to the fraudsters
Windsor Police say perpetrators of the so-called Canada Revenue Agency scam have begun getting their victims to pay up using Bitcoin.
In one recent case, someone responded to a phone message indicating they owe back taxes and faced jail if not paid.
The fraudster asked for the name of the company used to file taxes.
While on the phone, they received another call from someone posing as a member of the company confirming the fraudster's claims. It's believed they 'spoofed' the number.
Police said the fraudsters instilled a sense of fear in the victims and kept them on the phone for several hours.
They were instructed to make withdrawals at a number of banks and send bitcoin.
This victim lost $17,000.
Other cases in the past month have resulted in losses ranging from $2,000 to $13,000.
Windsor Police said the CRA will not accept Bitcoin as payment for outstanding taxes.
