Cooler December, warmer January and February for Windsor-Essex, Environment Canada says

Weather in December will be cooler than normal in the Windsor-Essex region, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

In fact, the weather agency says the region is the only one in Canada where cooler temperatures are forecasted. 

But January and February will be warmer than usual, said senior climatologist Dave Phillips. 

"I'm going to say that this winter is going to be more of a winter than last year," Phillips told CBC's Windsor Morning.

"But you know … it could still be warmer than normal. It's just that compared to last year, which was the non-winter where we cancelled winter, it's going to be more of a winter."

People who love outdoor sports such as cross-country skiing, snowboarding and ice fishing will be happy for an opportunity to do more of them, he said. 

And people might find themselves in better shape at the end of the season as a result of shoveling more snow. 

"I don't think there's going to be anything cruel about this winter," Phillips said.

"It's not going to be memorable."

Asked whether or not Windsor could expect a white Christmas in 2024, Phillips said he would bet against it.

"I mean, you really have less than a 50 per cent chance," he said.

"It's almost cutting down to less than a 40 per cent chance. So, you know … you have to do more than just dreaming about it. You have to pray for it."
