Health officials confirmed Windsor's first human case of Lyme disease, according to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

Dr. Wajid Ahmed, associate medical officer of health for the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, urges residents to protect themselves against ticks when outdoors.

Health officials in May scoured areas of tall grass, looking for disease-carrying ticks that could be harmful to humans. They looked at areas like Ojibway Park, to search for black-legged ticks that are known to carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

These ticks are a crawling, non-flying insect that feed on blood.
