A man has been found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 death of an 85-year-old woman in Georgina, Ont., York police say.
Bradley Strickler, 24, was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years for the murder of Sandy Gauthier, investigators said in a news release issued Friday. Both lived in Georgina, Ont., just north of Toronto, police say.
Shortly after 5 a.m. on Jan. 15, 2022, emergency responders were called to a house fire in Georgina, police say. Gauthier was found dead inside after the fire was extinguished. A post-mortem examination determined the death to be a homicide, police said.
Investigators were able to identify Strickler as a suspect using genetic genealogy, police said. He was 21 years old at the time.
Strickler was charged with first-degree murder in October 2022, along with two other charges, which were later dropped. A jury found him guilty on Feb. 11, according to the news release.
