Waterfront Toronto unveiled the winning design for the new Jack Layton Ferry Terminal Friday, a proposal chosen from 33 submissions from architecture firms in 12 countries.

The design was created by KPMB Architects, West 8 and Greenberg Consultants and is part of a larger plan to revamp the ferry terminal and Harbour Square Park.

Five designs were short-listed in January and put on online for public consultation. A jury ultimately selected the winner, called Harbour Landing, which includes ample green space and uses natural forms to mimic the waves of the harbour.

The design needs to be approved by Waterfront Toronto's board of directors before moving to city council for funding. There is no currently no money allocated directly for the project.

About 1.3 million people use the ferry terminal each year.
