Uber car collides with taxi downtown
City of Toronto has been seeking permanent injunction to shut down Uber
An Uber car smashed into a taxi overnight in the downtown neighbourhood of Old Town, in what may be the most metaphorical collision in Toronto's recent history.
The woman Uber driver was charged with failing to yield to traffic on a thruway.
The collision just before 3 a.m. ET, at the intersection of King Street East and Princess Street, sent two people to hospital — a 35-year-old male passenger in one vehicle, and a 45-year-old female in the other, although it's not immediately clear who was in which vehicle.
The collision coincides with the city's court attempt to gain an injunction to shut down Uber's operations. A decision could come as early as today.
Taxi drivers have staged multiple demonstrations downtown and in front of the Ontario Legislature, as the ridesharing service doesn't pay the same city operating fees as taxi companies do.
Similarly, they argue that Uber puts the public at risk, as drivers operating under the company's UberX service — which connects people seeking a ride with a private citizen willing to offer it in their personal vehicle — are not eligible under the insurance plans that cover licensed taxi rides.
