Twins born on different years: one in 2013, the other 2014
Babies separated by 8 minutes, but have diferent birth years
Two little girls entered the world eight minutes apart, but the day of their birth has a year’s divide.
A Mississauga woman gave birth to two bundles of joy on New Year’s Eve and the earliest moment of New Year's Day. Although the girls are only minutes apart, they do not share the same birthday, or even the same year.
Gabriela was born at 11:52 p.m. on Dec. 31., but her sister, Sophia, was born just after midnight as 2014 began -- a unique moment which lead to some excitement in the operating room.
“It was like, oh my gosh, it’s a New Year baby…” their mother, Lindsay Salgueiro said. “One was born in 2013, Gabby ended up being the last one of the year and Sophia ended up being the first.”
It’s a rather rare event. Obstetrician Dr. John Smith, said he had seen twins born on different days and even different months, but never different years.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever heard of it or been aware of it. Ironically, I was joking with this lady a couple of days before in the clinic, ‘oh, they’ll be born in different years’ and then when i heard it on the radio…” Smith laughed.
Perhaps having different birthdays will be a good thing for the girls in some ways.
“That would make me happy, to have my own separate birthday, as opposed to sharing that special day.”
Now a question many have asked: will the girls get to be in the same grade?
Salgueiro, hopes so and the hospital has told her exceptions could be made in this case.
In fact, she hopes she can enter both girls into the earlier of the two possible grades.
