5 Toronto tracks that unabashedly show love for the city
CBC Toronto's Song in the 6ix is looking for Toronto's new anthem
Drake is not shy about professing his love for the six. And you shouldn't be either.
CBC Toronto's Song in the 6ix is looking for Toronto's new anthem — an original song about Toronto. You could win $10,000, plus a CBC-produced music video.
The contest opens Jan. 18 and runs until Feb. 19
These are five tributes to Toronto that fill us with pride (and can offer you a little inspiration.)
'I'm from the T dot oh, rep it everywhere I go'
The Anthem by Kardinal Offishall is exactly that: an anthem for Toronto. The video, shot in a single day, according to Kardinal, features nearly every nook and cranny of the city: Yonge-Dundas Square, Flemingdon Park, Malvern and 250 Front Street West (also known as the CBC.)
'The dot, the six, T.O, the cold, last T silent, Toronto you know'
IVIVI is what else but the 416. YouTube stars Lilly Singh (better known as Superwoman) and Humble the Poet dropped this ode to the city on April 16 (or 416, d'uh) in 2015. The duo, in Singh's own words, rap about "the wonderful things about this beautiful city including the Raptors, multiculturalism and all the pretty girls."
'I was runnin' through the 6 with my woes'
There is a little Toronto woven into most tracks by Drake, who is "just glad to see the city on the map," as he raps in Wu-Tang Forever. But Know Yourself with its now-ubiquitous hook got nearly everyone running through the six — with or without their woes and those not even from Toronto.
'I want to take a streetcar downtown'
Lowest of the Low, a much-loved Toronto indie band, captures a cold winter's day streetcar commute in this '90s track. Listening to Rosy and Grey you can envision a wintry day, taking the streetcar. That is quintessential Toronto, admit it.
'I'll be back at Echo Beach some day'
Martha and The Muffins have a "very boring" job as an office clerk but fortunately, time flies when they remember they can hang at Echo Beach again.
