Talks with Ontario public elementary teachers resume today

The union representing Ontario elementary school teachers and the province will return to the bargaining table today. It will be the first time all sides are meeting since talks broke down on Sept. 11.

First meeting since labour talks between province and teachers broke down last month

The union representing Ontario elementary school teachers and the province will meet at the bargaining table today for the first time since talks broke down on Sept. 11.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation (ETFO) of Ontario says bargaining dates have been set for today and Tuesday.

Bargaining broke down last month and ETFO had threatened rotating one-day strikes as the government urged elementary teachers to accept deals similar to those that had worked for their colleagues in high schools and the Catholic system.

ETFO says it will continue its work-to-rule action until a "fair and reasonable agreement" specific to its members can be reached.

As part of its work-to-rule campaign, ETFO has said its members would not take part in parent-teacher meetings or class trips and not fill in for absent colleagues.

ETFO is also still proceeding with an unfair labour practice complaint with the Ontario Labour Relations Board over what it claimed was the refusal of the government and the Ontario Public School Boards' Association to bargain in good faith.
