The Toronto District School Board has hired an integrity commissioner to ensure its 22 trustees follow the rules.

The board has appointed Suzanne Craig to provide advice on following the TDSB Code of Conduct, procedures and trustee obligations under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.

Craig's appointment comes just a couple of months after an expert advisory panel concluded "a culture of fear" exists at the board, and recommended the board be placed under supervision while it undergoes sweeping changes to improve governance and restore public confidence.

The TDSB says it's the first school board in Ontario to have such a position.

Craig has previously worked as integrity commissioner for several municipalities including the cities of Vaughan, Barrie, and St.Catharines.

Craig starts April 4.
