On Wednesday, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford voted against motions to congratulate Olympic athletes and also to name a street in honour of Nelson Mandela. The controversial Toronto mayor — who was the only one to vote against the motions — later claimed he hit the wrong voting button in both cases and asked for a re-vote.

The council meeting briefly debated Ford's call but then moved on to other business.

There was no re-vote.

Ford, who is running for re-election, has been embroiled in a number of scandals over the past year which have made him something of an international celebrity.

He has admitted to smoking crack cocaine in a drunken stupor, made profane remarks on live television and has been filmed ranting incoherently in a Jamaican accent.

The mayor is also the subject of an ongoing police investigation during which he was photographed urinating in public.
