Politicians asked not to attend Easter parade, leaving the mayor with a lot of chocolate

Mayor Rob Ford carted out 10,000 chocolate Easter eggs to illustrate his latest conundrum at city hall.

He bought the eggs to give to children at the Toronto Beaches Lions Easter Parade. But the mayor, his rivals in the municipal election and all other local politicians have been asked not to attend the parade.

So what does he do with 10,000 chocolate eggs? — the mayor wanted to know.

Keith Begley, the club's Easter parade director, says the organizers have, "always restricted its involvement and exposure to anything of a political nature" but this year are making the parade a "political free zone."

Begley says elected officials have attended in the past but have not followed the "parade regulations and directives." As many as 10 mayoral candidates have applied to be at the parade this year.

"They don't want us there, they don't want us there," said Ford, confirming he would respect Begley's wishes and not attend. "When you got 10,000 eggs though, I wish they would have told me a little earlier."

Ford has previously been asked not to attend other holiday parades. In some cases, last year's Etobicoke Santa Claus Parade, he went anyway.
