The process to build a new GO station on Eglinton Avenue West will begin this summer, Metrolinx announced on Friday.

The provincial transit authority announced it will conduct an environmental assessment for the future Caledonia Station during the summer months — a key first step in the construction of the new facility. When completed, the proposed station will integrate with the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line.

The proposed station's construction is dependant on passing the environmental assessment.

"With easy access to the future Eglinton Crosstown LRT, this proposed new GO station would improve the integration of two major transit networks," said Bruce McCuaig, president and CEO of Metrolinx.

Metrolinx is also set to host several public meetings to get the community's feedback on the proposed station. The first will be held on Tuesday, May 26 at York Memorial Collegiate Institute from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The provincial government is touting the new station as a part of its Moving Ontario Forward plan to invest $31.5 billion over the next 10 years in transit.
