As Syrians begin to arrive, more wait in limbo in the Middle East
Siham, a Syrian refugee, still waits to come to Toronto as other refugees begin to leave
An influx of Syrian refugees is set to arrive in Toronto shortly, but for many refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and elsewhere, the wait is not yet over.
Siham is a Syrian refugee who's been living illegally in Beirut for more than two years. She and her daughters have been approved to come to Canada. but are living in limbo even as planes are set to take off.
She says her husband was killed by a sniper in Syria because he was documenting human rights abuses by the Bashar Assad government.
Siham and her daughters left for Lebanon soon afterward, as she worried that she could become a target for speaking out against the Assad regime.
Because of her precarious status in Lebanon, CBC is not using her last name.
CBC first spoke with Siham in October, when she was first connected to Canadian sponsors, the Fairlawn Church.

"It's so great to hear some of us refugees have finally left Lebanon," she said from Beirut. "It left me full of hope."
