The Crown has wrapped its case against three people accused of running an illegal daycare where a 2-year-old died. It showed images of dozens of cots crammed inside the Ontario home.
Eva Ravikovich died of unknown causes at an unlicensed daycare in Vaughan, Ont., on July 8, 2013.
Husband and wife Ruslan and Olena Panfilova and their daughter Karyna Rabadanova each face a charge of operating an illegal daycare under the Day Nurseries Act.
There were 27 children at the daycare on the day Ravikovich died — far more than the five children under the age of 10 that the province says unlicensed daycares are allowed to care for. That fact, and the conditions inside the home, the Crown argues, are proof that the facility was being used as a "business entirely and fully."
Images taken by provincial officials show toys, equipment and cots filling every room of the house, which also housed 14 dogs.
A health inspector also said at the time that listeria-contaminated and rotting food was found inside the house.
The accused are not facing any criminal charges in connection with Ravikovich's death. York Regional Police said an investigation into the case is still ongoing.
The three accused face up to a year in jail if convicted of running an illegal daycare. The Crown also wants the family to pay $1.1 million in fines.
The trial is set to resume in two weeks, when the defence makes its case.
