Across Toronto, there has been an outpouring of grief and solidarity in the wake of the terror attacks in Paris.

From the mayor to the chief of police to landmark signs across the city, the reaction was swift and heartfelt.

"The people of Toronto stand with Paris and offer our solidarity and support at this heartbreaking time," Mayor John Tory tweeted.

The mayor also invited everyone to join in a gathering outside city hall on Saturday for an afternoon vigil.

A popular image being shared widely on social media was the Toronto sign outside City Hall. The new landmark by the reflecting pool in Nathan Phillips Square was relit in the colours of the French flag, blue, white and red.

Also on social media, people instantly started sharing a striking image of the CN Tower lit up, as well, in France's colours.

Another moving image came when a woman took the time to lay a bouquet of carnations and a candle at the office building housing the Consulate General of France in Toronto.

Police Chief Mark Saunders, meanwhile, decried the violent loss of life, calling it "unthinkable."
