A 28-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving causing death after a man was struck and killed crossing the road in Scarborough Tuesday morning.

The 25-year-old victim suffered life-threatening injuries and died at the scene.

Police say the pedestrian was crossing McCowan Road at Kenhatch Boulevard at around 6 a.m. when he was struck by a northbound vehicle and thrown into the southbound lanes.

A short time later, police found an abandoned vehicle just north of the scene and began a search for the driver and any possible passengers.

"The amount of injury that the pedestrian suffered was substantial," Const. Clint Stibbe said. "There is no way the driver would not have known that they struck something — and as a result they had a responsibility to stay here."

Police took one man into custody sometime around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and are still searching for a second male suspect.

The driver has since been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, criminal negligence causing death and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

Investigators are reviewing video from two TTC buses that were stopped at the scene at the time of the collision, which are believed to have captured the incident on tape.

Investigators were also seen gathering evidence inside a bathroom of a McDonald's restaurant at McCowan Road and Finch Avenue East.

Friends of the victim came to see what happened at the scene Tuesday.

They told CBC News that the man was 25 and had been en route to work in Mississauga.
