Lock up sexual predator indefinitely: Crown

A man who admitted sexually assaulting children in the Niagara region should be imprisoned indefinitely, Crown lawyers will tell a Welland judge Tuesday.

A man who admitted sexually assaulting children in the Niagara region should be imprisoned indefinitely, Crown lawyers will tell a Welland judge Tuesday.

Prosecutors are expected to ask the judge to declare Cory Newton a dangerous offender following his convictions for 34 sexual offences involving young boys.

He could be sent to prison indefinitely, if the move is successful.

Newton was first convicted of sexual offences against five boys in 1998.

After he was released on bail, he assaulted six other boys.

The Crown says he targeted boys under the age of 12, who were being raised by single mothers, or came from dysfunctional families.

Some of his victims, who are now adults, are expected to testify at the hearing.

Only about 300 prisoners are designated as dangerous offenders in Canada. About half of them are from Ontario.
