A fire at track level at Kennedy station disrupted subway service and caused headaches for commuters during the morning rush hour.

Toronto firefighters were called to Kennedy Station at 7:20 a.m. for a report of smoke coming from the track level.

Capt. Adrian Ratushniak of Toronto Fire Services said they found a "light haze of smoke" and say the cause is believed to be a smouldering rail tie.

He says the fire has now been put out, and crews have cleared the scene.

During the investigation subway trains turned back at Warden Station, and shuttle buses were running between Warden and Kennedy stations.

TTC says subway service has resumed.
