Jian Ghomeshi case: 2 sex assault charges withdrawn
Ex-CBC Radio host now faces 5 sex assault and 1 choking charge, expected to stand trial in 2016
Two of the eight sexual assault charges against former CBC Radio host Jian Ghomeshi were dropped at a Toronto court this morning.
The Crown withdrew two of the sex assault charges after determining there wasn't a reasonable prospect of conviction based on the evidence. He still faces five sexual assault charges and one charge of overcoming resistance by choking.
The Crown said the charges weren't dropped because of an issue of witness credibility, the CBC's Ioanna Roumeliotis reported from the downtown court.
The charges against Ghomeshi, 47, stem from interactions with four women.
His court case, which involves three women, will proceed to a judge-only trial in February 2016. One sexual assault case, however, is set to be tried separately in June 2016.
Ghomeshi's lawyer, Marie Henein, said he will plead not guilty to all charges. He is currently free on $100,000 bail with numerous conditions.
Ghomeshi was not in court Tuesday.
