Hot weekend ahead for for Toronto
It'll feel like 40 C once you factor in the humidity on Saturday and Sunday
Temperatures are expected to soar to 32 C this weekend, prompting Environment Canada to issue heat warnings for Saturday and Sunday.
Humidex values, a measure of heat and humidity, will be near 40 C on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, though temperatures may be slightly cooler near the shorelines of Lake Ontario, the agency predicts.
Saturday night will be very warm with overnight minimum temperatures in the 20 to 23 C degree range but the heat is set to break by Monday.
Until then, Environment Canada says the heat poses greatest risk for:
- The elderly.
- Infants and young children.
- People with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses.
- People who work in the heat.
- People who exercise in the heat.
- People without access to air conditioning.
- And homeless people.
Several GTA communities, including Brampton, have already made plans to open up cooling stations.
The City of Toronto has not released a heat alert at this time. If it does issue a heat alert on the weekend, it would be the first one of 2015. Last year there was only one heat alert, though there were seven heat alerts and six extreme heat alerts the in 2013.
