High Park cherry blossoms approaching 'peak bloom'
Sakura trees scattered around High Park have almost reached "peak bloom" this spring, according to the High Park Nature Centre.
Peak bloom will be anywhere from Thursday to Sunday.
The centre tracks and predicts the peak bloom days for the trees each year. Watching the cherry blossoms bloom has become a spring pastime as the city thaws from winter to summer.
According to the centre, the blooming period begins when 20 per cent of the cherry blossoms are open. It ends when their petals fall. "Peak bloom" starts when at least 70 per cent of the blossoms are open.
The centre reports that the trees toward the top of the hill near Grenadier Restaurant are fully blooming, while the trees near Grenadier Pond are about 50 per cent bloomed, and the ones near the Jamie Bell Adventure Playground are not near full bloom yet.
Cherry blossoms bloom around early May and the white flowers can remain for close to two weeks depending on the weather.
The bloom makes High Park and other parks prime for picture-taking. Watch the video above to see the cherry blossom phenomenon.
